On my second Aston, I’ve been in love with the brand, like many others, since the movie Goldfinger. Say what you will about Sean Connery, the real star of the movie was the DB5, with or without machine guns, oil sprays, or ejection seats. The Aston Martin DB5 was beautiful to look at from every angle, and I wanted one badly. Ah well.
But for a long while, tiny Aston Martin just didn’t have the financing to compete in the ultra-luxury niche it has played in for a century. With hits and misses along the way, Aston has always lagged the industry in both innovation and electronics. Cash infusions from various players have steadied the ship since 2018 and Aston’s cars have incrementally improved. Starting in 2015, the DB11, Vantage, DBX and hypercars Valkyrie and Valhalla turned Aston Martin around and has led to the creation of the all new DB12.
The new DB12 replaces 80% of the older DB11 and heads Aston Martin’s cars in a very different, very modern, direction. Aston Martin describes the new DB12 as a ‘super tourer’, because, well, why not? It’s their marketing department.
With hallmarks of the replaced DB11, the DB12 may look familiar on the outside, but 80% of the car is new. The no longer available V12 is replaced by the DB12’s 4.0L V8, now capable of 671 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, and Aston claims 0-60 times of 3.5 seconds and a top end speed to 202 MPH. Amazing numbers for a 4142 pound car.
Designed as a touring car, Aston Martin stresses the new car is a drivers car made for both cruising and driving con brio. The company says the DB12 is its “most complete and accomplished” DB model yet, with the ability to blur the lines between total comfort and out and out handling capability.
