When 100 US car manufacturers just won’t do…
When I was 10, a neighbor kid and I built a cheap soap box racer out of stuff we found in our parents garages (sorry about the lawn mower wheels, dad). It didn’t last a week before breaking but I was proud of building that little toy.
Fast forward to today as a friend of mine is laboring to do something far more daunting in his garage; he’s building a real car, mostly at home, to his design.
Stripping a donor Subaru down to chassis and drivetrain, he has the basis for a +230HP car about the size of a Lotus Elise, weighing less than1500 pounds.
To me, this all this sounds about as much fun as rectal bleeding, but I’ve seen the plans, know the dude, and it’s starting to sound very real.
I’m going to follow his progress, encourage him as much as possible, and send him $20 just to get in on the ground floor. They laughed at Elon Musk, too.
Strictly as an aside, the cars most coveted in the world are produced by the following:
- Volkswagen owns: Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Audi and Bentley
- Fiat-Chrysler (FCA) owns: Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Fiat
- BMW Group owns: BMW, Rolls Royce and Mini
- Daimler owns: Mercedes and Smart
A few years from now we may be adding this home-built to the list…
