A short walk from where we live, I spent this past weekend watching drivers of the future hone their budding skills.

They aren’t just born you know; they’re made. It used to be Formula 3, then 2, and maybe Formula 1, if the Gods smiled.

mail_image_preview-9Today, everyone says you have to be into karting by age 8 if you hope to acquire the skills necessary to have any shot at pro racing.

But what can toddlers learn that will help them develop into drivers some day?

The city of Manhattan Beach, CA., has been doing its part since 1990, with the Halloween favorite Pumpkin Races.

Paint your pumpkin, dress it up, but just don’t cheat, this gravity event has given kids a real taste of amateur competition.

Rolling round, orange squashes downhill at speeds approaching…well, pretty fast, if I’m any judge of it…

…kids excited by the action, the glamor, the raucous crowds anticipating high speed collisions…it’s Monaco without the Casino.

You can’t tell me that some little boy or girl hasn’t gotten the bug to race at this event. Lined up, gourd to gourd, wheels on the starting line, pumpkins in 1st gear…

Always the Sunday before Halloween, this is racing at its finest, and your junior piloti is going to appreciate the experience.
